More than 1,000 volunteers representing 69 community organizations raised $47,000 for their causes while participating in the 6th Annual BIG Sweep this past April. Volunteers cleared Frederick County roadsides and parks of 22.5 tons of trash and recyclable items and 296 tires weighing 4.3 tons. The top three organizations turning in the most funds by this year’s deadline were Hood College student clubs, the Senior Recreation Council, and Small Angels Rescue. Congratulations, and thanks to all participants.
The BIG
Sweep has doubled in size and impact since it first was
launched with 500 volunteers in 2002. In the course of the
last six years, the event has mobilized over 5,000
volunteers who have cleaned up more than 100 tons of trash
and recyclables, as well as 2,800 tires. Donors who
sponsored the volunteers’ clean-up efforts have
collectively contributed approximately $236,000 to dozens
of local community organizations.
