What is Youth Action Corps?

Volunteer Frederick lives up to its mission to inspire, strengthen, and support volunteerism in Frederick County through its Youth Action Corps (YAC). Each fall and spring a group of committed youth volunteers identify a community need, then design and implement a service learning project to meet that need. By participating in this process, youth volunteers develop skills such as mobilizing others for action, public speaking, and communicating with the media. All Frederick County youth, ages 11 through 17, with a commitment to service are welcome to participate.

Example of Youth Action Corps at work

The Youth Action Corps and the Francis Scott Key Mall teamed up to raise awareness about how you can prepare your family for a potential disaster and to raise money for Hurricane relief efforts. Youth volunteers painted a mural about disaster preparedness in November and December 2005. While the mural was being painted, additional volunteers collected donations from mall patrons that benefited Hurricane survivors who relocated to Frederick County.

Why should I participate in YAC?

• AC gives you the opportunity to get creative with your ideas on how to become involved in the community, and the Volunteer Frederick staff gives you the "know-how" by showing you how to make contacts and get the message out about what you are doing!
• YAC can help you develop skills that will aid in your personal, academic, and professional life as you make decisions about life goals, schools, and careers.
• You can learn about hundreds of different ways our society works to enhance itself.
• t’s an easy way to make a difference in your community and learn about issues that you find personally important.
• You will make new friends, some with common interests and others that you never realized you could become close to!
• It can enhance your college applications and resumes.
• You can record your service hours to help earn the FCPS Meritorious Service Award or, if you are a transfer student, complete your 75 hour community service requirement for graduation.
